Thread: Top mounts do and donts

  1. #1

Default Top mounts do and donts

Seen a few horror stories and saw a freshly fitted set of top mounts yesterday that I had to have words about

    Do
Make sure you order right type if replacing as later and earlier cars have different pin locations so mounts are different I will add pics tomorrow
Car build code is 5 figure number on the sticker located passenger side B pillar near door catch , ignore the two letters as they are the factory shortcode for where the car was built)

This type up to 10156 build code.Citroen part number is 5038 91

From Car build code 10156 onwards build code Citroen part number is 5038 F5

Use OEM replacements ( febi bilstien ) get them on eBay at a reasonable price and with or without the bearing .
Try to replace mount and bearing together (it's cheaper in the long run )

When fitting any coil over setup make sure the load washer( large flat washer )

is fitted as it stops the shock absorber rod pushing through the mount ( this is why lots of coil overs eat top mounts )

When refitting to standard suspension the load washer is in the form of an upturned cup washer on top of the plastic shock absorber dust cover

When fitting top mounts to car make sure both locating pins are in the outer hole on the car ( see pic below ......if you fit both on inner hole you push the top of the strut further out. Thus altering camber angle )

Do fit the correct nut ( thin one with built in washer) to secure the top mount to your shock absorber( then when you fit the cup top washer it will do its job)

    Don't

Do not use an impact wrench on the mounts as this can damage the centre bush , use a spanner and Allen key set up

Do not fit any front suspension without the load washer fitted , if it fails it can wreck your car...top mount is designed so this washer transfers load onto rubber mount, if not fitted all shock absorber loading just forces shocker rod through the mount ...... please see below

Follow this and your top mount will last longer
    Trek

Notice no load washer on either of these pics ( should be between the top of shocker rod and bottom of the top mount bush )

What can happen if you fit incorrectly

This was the guys pride and joy ---- not good

if someone can stickify this it would be appreciated

Wont really cause you any problems, seems a common fault for them to be on backwards, just means you get camber

What should the load washer look like? Daft question but I can't for the life of me remember. Hopefully if I'm snapping springs then I don't need to worry about top mounts haha

shouldnt come loose as basically washer is sandwiched between nut that fastens top mount to shock absorber and the top nut, even if mount totally us it should stay tight

According to the febi bilstein website, this is the right one?

Both top mounts fit all models but top mount locating pin location varies.... so look at build code and order right ones from above info

FYI question marks can replace full stops, you don't have to use both.
Check out my progress thread(s). Good and bad comments welcome

Out of interest how much camber do you get by changing the pin to the inner hole?

This applies to the standard suspension but would I be correct in saying, all of these components should be fitted to aftermarket setup too?

Yes except for 4 as that's the spring carrier
When fitting coil overs you don't need that bit as the coil over should have an alloy adaptor from it's spring setup

Also sometimes don't need 6 as coil overs sometimes come with a large flat washer as shown in the posts above
