View Full Version : HDMI cables + PS3's
I've got my HDTV coming this week and will be getting a PS3 later on (to coincide with the release of Final Fantasy XIII) but i was wondering what peoples opinions were on HDMI cables? Is it worth spending £30 on an appararently 5 star rated one eg do people think it makes a noticable difference when running things at 1080p?

I have my 360 running through a HDMI cable. Cost me a whole £2 from Asda.
Maybe not the best cable money can buy but I can see the difference.
Well worth £2 of my hard earnt cash.

deffo makes a difference but i think it depends what your running it through, i cant really tell much difference between a good quality cable and a cheap one on the tv both running 1080P, but when plugged into the projector theres quite a noticeable difference mind that is just over 100" so can see it better, i'd just go for one in between cheap and good quality

yes running your ps3 via hdmi make a hugh difference, as does tv ect...... but i saw a program not so long ago and it said there aint much difference between the non gold/gold plated cables. it being a ps3 it will properly only run in 720p anyways.

???.. it should run full 1080P if its a 1080P tv!
Got my free HDMI cables coming this week, should make a difference on the old sexbox, at the minute the res on mine is poor.

There is many an argument on what actually runs at 720/1080. The sexbox only does 720p (The games are almost all encoded in 720p, very few games are encoded in 1080p) and are just upscaled to 1080p. The PS3 can output 1080p but it is dependant on the game (will specify on the box if it is encoded in 720 or 1080).
With regards to the HDMI cable, for the majority of users there will not be a noticeable difference between a £5 HDMI and an £80 HDMI cable. My friends and I all buy unbranded HMDI cables from ebuyer and have never had an issue. Hope this helps

just cos you have a full hd tv dont mean your ps3 will run games in full hd(1080P) i think you will find (look on the back of the boxes) that most ps3 games , including aaa titles like uncharted 2 run in native 720p. as for the xbox most of the back of the boxes state 1080p but as already said its unscaled.
I know that not all ps3 games are 1080p from looking at the boxes. I just wanted to make sure cause on the packaging for some cables it says that it can handle 1080p so i was confused as to why it might say that, i always thought a hdmi cable was a hdmi cable lol
I was only going to compare say the standard HDMI cable that game sell for a tenner to the one that the shop recommended me for £35, im not spending any more than that on a cable!

I got a standard one from ASDA and it lasted 2 months, i've not got some gold tipped one from John Lewis was about £15 I think, not had any problems, cant say I noticed any difference between the two.... apart from this one has lasted longer.
Just got mine off my dad and I can't use HDMI and my turtle beach X1s, well pissed off about that.

Why can't you use the HDMI cable and X1's at the same time?
My Sexbox is done via HDMI and Im always using the X1's, there amazing

It was putting the sound through the TV, do you have the microsoft HDMI lead or a normal one?
I've sussed it out now, it's not ideal but it'll do.

Yeah mine does that, but I have to have the components in the TV even though they're not in the xbox for the X1's to work.

Do you have the elite or normal console?

You generally get what you pay for, you could buy a cheap HDMI cable like some do, to the normal eye there 'may' not even be a difference to a premium cable. It'll definitely be a step up from RGB/Component.
Just make sure it's gold plated, and unless you're some sort of analytical video technician or have a 150" television you won't notice the difference between that and a £100 cable.
Do you have the elite or normal console?
Think it's an arcade, it's not mine, it's my brothers.

Ah, with the Elite you get a thinner Audio adaptor for the xbox so that you can use audio and hdmi at the same time. http://www.game.co.uk/Accessories/Xbox-360/Xbox-360-HDMI-Cable-/~r332683/ (http://www.game.co.uk/Accessories/Xbox-360/Xbox-360-HDMI-Cable-/%7Er332683/)
Ignore the HDMI cable, but thats the adaptor. It gives the White/Red ports and an Optical Port to get 5.1 output. The X1 can then plug into those white/red ports and make the whole thing a lot easier
Ahh that means paying for stuff, and I'm a yorkshireman, rate tight fisted.
I'll leave it how I have it for now, means not paying LOL.
Cheers though NipNip.

There are numerous guides on youtube on how to remove the casing on the existing audio cable so that it will fit at the same time as an HDMI cable. Would solve both problems
