I know this is a C2 forum, but you all seem to have a good knowledge of other cars. Im liking the idea of buying a convertible but as ive said before I would prefer the option of a folding metal roof, but would look at a soft-top with the hard-top option. Thought I would look at the options available to me from my budget. Was going to add the Audi TT coupe but all the ones in my budget (Under £10,000) are super high milers or LHD.
In my opinion the two options I would prefer are the 206CC, the MG or the Racing Puma. I really like the MR2 but it is just too impractical and I really don’t like the interior.

In my opinion the two options I would prefer are the 206CC (4 seats and folding roof key points), the MG (Can get a newer model than the other cars) or the Racing Puma (Nearly brought a normal Puma Last year, Like the sporty look of the racing version). I really like the MR2 but it is just too impractical and I really don’t like the interior. I then add a Mini Cooper or Cooper S to this list.
I’m 21 after a fun car to own, before I have to worry about baby seats and MPG.
Your opinions please:

they all seem like hairdressers cars to me lol :)
i would say the Puma (non hairdresser) or the popular MX5
Ford puma Racing or the 1.7i they drive like a dream, reliable, quick, look great and values are pretty decent too.

i like the 206ccna dit has 4 seats something rare, but has you say it will be replaeced soon by the 207!! but then again you do only plan on having it for a short while...the best bet would be the mg as you could get a newer model for a good price, and it does look great!! i think parts should be easy to find as mg/rovers still being made... forget the puma...its been around forever or at least feels like it!!

get an old school MR2 not any of this new rubbish.
out of that selection i'd probly take the smart tbh, the rest are all too girly.
Danny
14-02-2007, 12:32 PM
ooo, i missed the smart, that is probably the least girly of them all!

Hate the copen but had to add it in as it had the metal folding roof. Really cant pick the MR2. Im planning on some camping trips this year with my mates so I need to fit a small tent in which would be impossible with the mr2, copen and the smart.
My girlfriends a hair dresser so could pass any of them on to her when im bored with it!!!
I think the MG looks great with the metal roof on. Looks like the limited edition sporty coupe one they built around the same time.
If anyone can suggest a coupe or convertible that is insurable at my age and not a hairdressers car let me know, but im not after anything older than 2001!!! and no not the Hyundai coupe as I hate it.

the MG will break, and then when it's broken you'll find it hard to fix. And it'll be worth nothing 20 mins after you buy it!
my mates gf had a 54 plate one and she took it in for a trade in before it was a year old and the garage she bought it in wouldn't even take it. the sales man advised her to have it burned out to get the insurance money!

Suppose thats one big problem with the MG, hence why im swaying toward the 206CC as its the most practical out of the collection on impracticable cars, if that makes sense.
Its has four seat, a secure metal roof, and will hold its price better than others.

They are all hairdressers cars.... and imo they are all horrible.

Pah, Are you a trainee hair dresser? Those sort of cars make your man hood smaller, not bigger.
Seriously, scrap the newer cars, far too much safety and power restrictions. The PUG roof barely works and it looks aweful.
If i were you, i would go out and buy a damn good conditioned MR2 MK2 Turbo. Shed loads of power, comfy seats, T-Bar removeable roof, Ooooooddles of fun as it's RWD and the engine is in the back.
Failing that the Puma is a sound and strong vehicle offering plenty of power and typical Ford Reliability. My mum has a 1.6 and it goes well and feels responsive on the corners.
The MX-5's are great, especially when they are blown, great fun track cars that will be most things.
Save up some more money and get an Elise i say! :P

What it is that I leave uni this year so im budgeting on what I can afford on my part time wage just in case I dont get a job straight away.
But at the same time im not going to rush into buying a car as i have one so can afford to be fussy.
Have sat in a racing puma and they are great inside
Smart Roadster for short journeys / pleasure car (very economical, but not good at speed for noise,)
206 cc for all round budget car,
or, my personal favouroute, (for it's rear wheel drive reason,) the MX5.
Collect the full specs from www.whatcar.com, which includes video reviews, running costs, and valuations.
Let us know what you get in the end.

No problems there, ask the hair dresser with the big smile on her face LOL
Seriously though, I dont want a older car I think my short list will be 206CC, Mini Cooper S or Puma. Think the C2 VTS has dropped off as im after a leather interior with a bit more power.

She want me to get a pink car, I told where she could stick that, in a polite way obviously.
She found this one for sale:

I have actually been looking at prices for a 206cc myself today and am going back to Pug on friday for test drive etc. I saw the 207cc IMO its too big and bug eyed at the front.
I was also looking at Tigra but im same as you my price range would be the 1.4 which i already have in the C2 and the Tigra is heavier.
Have look on Glasses and Parkers guide, you can compare cars and see which is better etc. Ive sat here doing my bit of research and found out i now prefere 206cc to the Tigra. At end of the day go for something YOU like!!!
tweedbean
14-02-2007, 03:38 PM
Yeah I didnt like the Tigra either, added to the list as another option thats all. I agree I dont like the 207cc, had a look at it the other day. Have you seent he seats in the back of the 206cc not much room but great for an emergency. Fun but pratical, I would say get the 2.0 se if you can afford it as the smaller engine is underpowered for the weight of the car.
missboo
14-02-2007, 03:52 PM
yes good idea to have the small backseats in 206cc even if they are a little unpractical.
Am just off to pug now to see if can get test drive. Will let u know the outcome!!

Think a bit too impractical, although I can get insured on it for around £1900. plus i bet its expensive to get fixed if anything goes wrong.

TBH!!!
If you want to be a man, then buy an Elise! It's only money! Like yo said, you have a car, so use that until you can afford something nice.
If i had that sort of money, i'd be buying a MK1/2 Escort and putting a nice engine in it.
Old School RWD rules.
Danny
14-02-2007, 04:14 PM
Now your talking with the ELise! :0
Can you afford to buy, run and maintain it though? No point struggling ;)
the elise mate if you can afford it. the rest would be great cars for your girlfriend, but not you mate!

The Elise is lovely...my boyfriends dad has one in yellow....they are gorgeous!!
Couldnt test drive 206cc....too much negative equity in my car at moment

MX5 will be the most fun of all of them guaranteed and £10k will pick you up a MINT mid-90s model. Aged yes but reliable as and cheap parts.

I've driven a few of your choices and i know it's very unpractical but the mr2 was a real buzz to drive. 10k will get u a 2002ish model with 40k on the clock. i very almost got one. it uses a smaller version of the engine that they use in the elise. i think the elise's engine is the same as the celica 190bhp
