Without getting too heavy or subjective this late at night I would say that this country isn't a half bad place to live in many ways, though of course in some ways it could be a lot better.
Much of this is due to Mrs T dragging us out of (old) Labour's mess in the 70s though most would agree she went too far and lost the plot after the late 80s. Gordon Brown inherited a fairly stable platform and hasn't messed it up too much yet mainly because new Labour stuck to Tory spending plans for the first four years. But his policies in the second term are storing up problems for the future. Watch the economy crash and burn in the next few years.
Remember that low inflation, full employment, lowish interest rates were all unheard of until the 90s. I remember high inflation, low employment, high interest rates, regular strikes, nationalised inefficient industries, power cuts, British Leyland etc. and I'm only 36. Many people on this group are a lot younger and are lucky to only know about these dreadful economic conditions via the history books.

...give it a few more years and we'll experience first hand the hike in fuel tax, in alcohol tax, in income tax, council tax... the collapse of pensions and the NHS aswell as an increase in un-employment due to industry collapsing due to costs.... etc etc etc
what a fun 4yrs everyone's voted for!!
