I've been lurking a while on these forums, thought it was time for an account!
With all the issues surrounding a replacement head unit in a mk2 would it be possible to keep the existing head unit and fit an after market one where the tray is? I was thinking, get an iso adapter from citroen and modify it to piggy-back the power source from the stock head unit (I would think this is ok as the amp on the stock unit wont be powering the speakers). Then disconnect the speaker inputs from the stock unit and feed into the iso adapter for the aftermarket unit. You then have the original unit for changing the clock and display stuff and a decent stereo underneath. I assume you could push the pins out of the connector blocks to make all modifications fully reversible. Possible or more hassle than its worth?

lol i guessed that might be the answer. I just dont want to give citroen the money to enable the aux input or decode the stereo from the car ( for what is a 3 minute job with their laptop! ).
