I have been getting a burning electrical smell in the car and moving off in first gear get a high pitched howling noise from the O/S front, this noise is also there when in second gear moving at 10-15mph. This morning the car would not start due to the battery being drained, I charged it for 4 hours and it started first time.
Can anyone confirm if this is the alternator as I am not getting any warning lights showing up? Also anyone any idea as to the cost of a replacement, I can fit myself?

The alternator has gone and is no longer charging the battery. They are quite expensive, I was quoted £368 including vat, this was a quote for a Bosch unit, I am not convinced that I have a Bosch alternator and have found a replacement for £180, still expensive, but not as bad as the OEM part. Why do they not stamp part numbers visibly so you can tell what part is in your vehicle. Just need to get it fitted and replace the belt at the same time.

Tried the breakers, they are like hens teeth. No not a tapping noise, more a squeel like a slipping belt and the unit gets very, very hot!!

Also look for C3 Hdi Alternators at the Scrappys Same engine and part.

Update:

Got a new alternator and belt fitted and all is well.
I got the alternator from ebay for £168 delivered and it was a Bosch unit, if anyone has this problem and you have a 1.4HDi without air-con you will need the SB140 from "electrostart2006" his service was great, shipped via parcel force 24 hour. Also you don't have to return the original.
Remember dealer price was £368 incl vat.
